WORKSHOP A 0900-1200

Practicalities of Achieving Certification for Sustainable Fisheries

Friend of the Sea (FOS) is a not for profit NGO which has developed a main international certification scheme, the only one certifying with the same seal of approval products from both fisheries and aquaculture. FOS sustainability criteria are considered among the most stringent: FOS aquaculture certification is considered equivalent by the EU to the recently introduced organic criteria, while the FOS criteria for products from fisheries follow the FAO guidelines. Products from more than 70 different species, produced by farms and fisheries both artisanal and industrial, have been certified. Fishoils, meals and feeds have also been certified including those produced by US based Omega Proteins. Products originate from all continents as the project has become a leading seafood certification scheme worldwide. This practical workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to understand what the certification process involves, how to plan and prepare for it, and how to successfully prioritize those key areas that will be part of the audit.

Workshop Leader: Dr Paolo Bray, Director, Friend of the Sea
